Tonight, Hillary Clinton proved she is ready to be President of the United States — and Donald Trump proved he is not. And tens of millions of Americans got to see that Donald Trump not only has no understanding of them or their lives — he has no respect for them either.
Donald Trump all but admitted he hasn't paid federal taxes on his income. He says that makes him smart. But what does that say to the factory worker or the nurse or the teacher earning $40,000 or $50,000 or $60,000 a year and paying almost 15% of their income to support our troops, keep our neighborhoods safe and clean, and rebuild our roads? Does he really think these patriotic Americans are not smart? He's a guy who is proud of a phrase he made famous: "You're fired." Tonight, he basically admitted to not paying workers for the work they do, to reneging on contracts and stiffing his employees. Because Donald Trump doesn’t believe the rules apply to him, his words are cheap. Whether it’s paying his fair share in taxes or honoring contracts, he talked with pride tonight about putting himself first before country and others. Do we expect him to behave any differently as President?
We were also reminded tonight of how Donald Trump talks about anyone who doesn’t look like him: without dignity or respect. He alluded to some of the same, tired old prejudices against women — a crystal clear reminder of what it will mean for our daughters and granddaughters, not to mention our sons and grandsons, the day Hillary Clinton is sworn into office as the first woman President of the United States.
Hillary Clinton made clear her vision to bring more people into the middle class and keep them there. She laid out how her plan will create millions of jobs. She specifically addressed some of the most important concerns of working families — from child care to higher wages to equal pay. And she spoke to the need for the country to come together and heal some of the deepest divisions in our society.
